Rabi al-Ula

Some of the most important historical events in Islamic history have occurred in this month. It was during the night preceding the first day of this month that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) had to take refuge in the cave of ‘Saur’ on the way to Yasrib while migrating from Makkah, and also of the great act of sacrifice which Hazrat Ali (a.s.) displayed by sleeping on the bed of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). It is mustahab to fast on the first day of this month in thanksgiving for the blessing of their safety. The ninth day of this month is another auspicious day, which is marked as Eid-e-Zahra and the day of Hazrat Saheb-uz-Zaman’s (a.t.f.s.) succession to the rank of Imam. Giving something in charity on this day pleases Allah (s.w.t.) so much that forgiveness from sins is ensured. It is the day of relief from sorrow. The 17th of this month was witness to the birth of the greatest Prophet and the best of the human beings of all time – Holy Prophet Mohammed ibn Abdullah (s.a.w.a) and also birth of 6th Imam Hazrat Jafar Sadiq (a.s.). Fasting on this day earns the equivalent of one year’s fasting. It is recommended to take a bath, recite Ziyarat of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) and Hazrat Imam Sadiq (a.s.), make brothers-in-faith happy and give charity. A two rak’at namaz, in each of which, Surah al- Hamd once and Surah Inna Anzalna, ten times followed by Surah Ikhlaas ten times has been prescribed. This day should be befittingly celebrated. For details of Ziyarat, refer Sheikh Qummi’s “Mafaatihul Jinaan”.
